Duathlon Performance Squad - Matrix 2005
Sunday, 26th December 2004
As part of it's continuing policy of support for non-Olympic disciplines, the BTA will be identifying a squad of elite athletes with ability or potential ability for medals in World and European Duathlon. These athletes will be eligible for a support programme of awards to help towards expenses such as competitions, medical care and training expenses. There will also be the potential for inclusion in the Trek bike scheme.
Eligibility for support will be based upon the criteria identified below and athlete eligibility will be reviewed annually. A selection panel, currently comprising of Heather Williams, Clive Faine and Ian Ford, will choose squad members. The Duathlon Team Manager and Elite Team Coordinator will manage the support programme and claims for support under the general direction of the Performance Committee.
Any allocation of award will only be towards a justifiable expense. For example medical support will need to be from a suitably qualified practitioner; travel expenses for an authorised event and so on.
Any service paid for by the BTA will need to demonstrate value for money and competence.
Duathlon Squad Criteria
While recognizing that the Programme will be reviewed in its entirety as part of the One Stop Plan, the following criteria and levels will be applied for 2005:
Athletes must be members of the BTA and be eligible to race for Team GB.
Selected athletes will be required to comply with the BTA anti doping policy and sign up to the testing programme.
On programme athletes will be expected to be available to race for Team GB and other key races as agreed with the Duathlon Team Manager, and attend training camps as required.
There will be three levels of award:
- A Level: Major Senior International Medallist at ITU World Duathlon Championship, ETU Duathlon Championship or Powerman World Championship.
- B Level: Potential Senior Major Medallist at ITU World Duathlon Championship, ETU Duathlon Championship or Powerman World Championship.
Demonstrated through: Top 10 placing at the above events; top 10 in ITU World Series events or a final ITU World Duathlon Ranking in the top 10 or a top 5 placing in an eligible Powerman race or (U23 only) medallist at ITU World U23 Duathlon Championships or ETU U23 Duathlon Championship and verifiable 3K run time of 10.01 (women) or 8.54 (men) - C Level: Emerging Senior Medallist at ITU World Duathlon Championship, ETU Duathlon Championship or Powerman World Championship.
Demonstrated through: Top 25 placing at the above events; top 25 in ITU World Series events or a final ITU World Duathlon Ranking in the top 25 or a top 10 placing in an eligible Powerman race. - Or (for U23 and junior athletes only) a verifiable 3K run time of 10.01 (women) or 8.54 (men) and demonstrated cycling ability in drafting duathlon races.
U23s achieving a 3K time of 9.16 (men), 10.26 (women) and juniors achieving a 3K time of 9.39 (men) 10.51 (women) can access the run/bike related coaching activities offered by the Triathlon WC Potential area programmes as long as they abide by the same commitment rules as the triathletes ( ie attendance / training diary etc). No cash awards will be made.
NB. World Series and Powerman races must meet minimum field sizes for mens races and satisfy appropriate criteria.
Athletes will be allocated to the appropriate level of award for the start of 2005 based on performances in 2004. However progress through the levels will be possible during the course of the year as race performance criteria are met. (Awards being prorated according to when new levels are attained.)
Athletes would normally be expected to progress onto Levels B or A after 1 year but, at the discretion of the Selectors and if progress is made, could be allowed to remain on Level C for a maximum of two years. An athlete on Level C would be expected to progress to the upper levels or be dropped from the programme after this maximum two year period. Junior and U23 athletes may remain on Level C for longer than 2 years at the discretion of the selectors so long as they have achieved the run standard required for full level C funding
Athletes in all levels will be reviewed annually.
At the discretion of the selectors an athlete may move down from Level A to B but Level C is only for emerging athletes.
Athletes wishing to be considered must apply for squad inclusion by sending in their details together with results over the last 12 months as evidence to justify selection.
Athletes who are in receipt of funding through other Schemes (WCP, Tri Wales, Tri Scotland, TASS etc.) are not eligible to apply for the Duathlon Performance Squad funding. Athletes wishing to review the merits of respective funding schemes should contact the DuathlonTeam Manager.
Applications for Senior, U23 and Junior squad membership should be sent in writing by Friday 14th January 2005
