Cave Opens Her '05 Account at the Ralphs California Half Ironman

Monday, 21st March 2005

Finishing 8th in the Ralphs California Half Ironman, Leanda Cave yesterday confirmed her recovery from the injuries which spectacularly ended her season last year when crashing during the ITU Cancun World Cup. Cave had previously only stepped out during the low-key Bribie Island Triathlon near her parents home in Queensland, but powering to the front in the 1.2 mile Oceanside swim and holding this through the first 30 miles of the 56 mile bike leg, she ran comfortably through the 13.1 mile run against more seasoned long-course opponents.

With only 5 weeks of outdoor cycling behind her, Cave's Half Ironman expedition was an affirmation of the endurance training she has managed to build first at British Triathlon's Swansea High Performance Centre, and then in a month in the sun on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. Her coach, Chris Jones, confirmed the value of the race as she builds towards this years ITU World Championships and the following Commonwealth Games, as both a demonstration of her base fitness and as confidence in returning to racing.

Cave's next outings will be at the Honolulu and Mazatlan ITU World Cups on April 16 and 24, respectively.
