Women's Sports Foundation Launch New Website

Tuesday, 25th October 2005

A new innovative website has been launched today by the Women's Sports Foundation to help sports increase physical activity levels among women and girls in the UK.

The website what works for women includes examples of innovative initiatives that have proved successful in getting women and girls active. The WSF hopes that sports deliverers and teachers will use the experiences of other organisations to create exciting new opportunities that work and to improve their existing schemes.

Research has shown that there are many barriers to women and girls taking part in activity for example lack of time, childcare and confidence, and for a sports deliverer it can be difficult to work out how to create a sports programme that will overcome these barriers.  Using the what works for women? website, users can search for particular barriers (there are 18 highlighted) and be presented with a list of initiatives that have overcome that particular barrier and how they have done it. Users can also search for programmes delivered by particular organisations for example local authorities, private organisations or schools. Or if more preferable, users can search for programmes that are aimed at, or have worked at, raising participation among particular groups of society, for example mothers, girls and women with disabilities.

The website gives a lot of detail about each of the initiatives: their overall aims, how they have overcome particular barriers, funding, marketing and promotion schemes used, particular successes, monitoring and evaluation applied, as well as ongoing issues that they are still trying to deal with.
