Windsor Triathlon Selected to Host 2006 Elite Championships
Monday, 17th April 2006
The Royal Windsor Triathlon has been selected by British Triathlon to host the 2006 British National Elite Triathlon Championships.
The Royal Windsor Triathlon, which takes place on the 11 June 2006, was voted British Triathlon's Event of the Year in 2005 for the sixth time in a row and hosted a qualifying race for the Salford ITU World Cup in 2005.
The British Elite Championships are expected to attract some of Great Britain's world class triathletes such as Tim Don, Andrew Johns, Stuart Hayes, Will Clarke, Liz Blatchford, Andrea Whitcombe, Michelle Dillon and Helen Tucker.
In addition to hosting the senior elite championships over the Olympic distance, the Royal Windsor Triathlon will host the British Triathlon Under 23 Championships and will act as a British qualifier for the 2006 Salford ITU World Cup.
Graeme Maw, Performance Director at British Triathlon stated "For the past few years, the Royal Windsor Triathlon has provided a great example of the strength of Britain's elite ranks, with some of the tightest of finishes from our Olympians - such as the sprint between AJ and Paul Amey in 2002 - mixed with experience for those emerging. It is essential that we have these opportunities on our calendar without having to constantly travel abroad, and are delighted that the winners this year will be rightly crowned National Champ."
John Lunt, Director of Human Race, said "It is a great honour to be invited to stage the Elite Championships. We look forward to welcoming the British Elites to Windsor and to give all of our age-group competitors and spectators the opportunity to watch Britain's finest triathletes in action."
The Royal Windsor Triathlon will provide an outstanding setting for the 2006 Championships with the historical backdrop of Windsor Castle, Eton College and the majestic River Thames. The river swim is followed by a bike course that takes in a number of villages around beautiful Berkshire and returns through Windsor Great Park. The multi-lap run course winds around the Great Castle, over Eton Bridge and along Eton High Street, passing famous Eton College. The event takes in 900 years of British history!
