Bumper Field as Unexpected Entrant Kerry Lang Steals the Show

Monday, 24th April 2006

The Ayr Duathlon held on Sunday 23rd of April saw around 80 entrants take part in the early springtime race. Race organiser Alistair Stewart commented "This is our largest ever number of entrants for this Duathlon  race and shows the increasing popularity of our growing sport."

In perfect spring conditions sunshine greeted the competitors who sped off from the scenic backdrop of Oswald Hall on the opening 5 kilometre run around the college grounds. This was followed by a testing two lap 20 kilometre bike section around Annbank and Mossblown, before repeating the 5 kilometre run.

Edinburgh's Drew Sharkey scored his second win at Ayrodynamics annual Duathlon event at Auchincruive on Sunday, repeating his victory over the same course in 2004.  Sharkey led from gun to tape although a strong second run by the host club's Andy McGhee saw him finish half a minute down, while Sharkey's clubmate, Stuart Macleod, finished well clear in third.

The female race saw an unexpected appearance from one of Scotland's Commonwealth Games representatives when Kerry Lang returned to action following her appearance in the Triathlon at the Melbourne Games. Unsurprisingly she came home well clear of her nearest rival, Alison Grosset of Stirling who got the better of Shona Forrest by only 18 seconds.

The Veteran race was a highly competitive affair with places in the Scotland team for the forthcoming British Championships in Edinburgh at stake and it was one of the more senior contestants who earned his place when Supervet Philip Mack with the second fastest bike leg of the day, came home 7th overall, ahead of Neal Doggett and Ayrodynamics Dougie Munro. Shona Robson won the female section with Val Martin of Stirling second and Susan Gray of Ayrodynamic in third.
