British Duathlon Championship.....Major Race Centrepiece of Triathlon Festival
Friday, 5th May 2006
On 13th May in Edinburgh at the Commonwealth Pool and Arthur's Seat - 4 races will take place in a showpiece event for the sport of Triathlon in Scotland. Competitors ranging from 8 years old right up to 60+ will take part in various races.
Race organiser Bruce Kidd said "The 4 races are set to be a showpiece for the sport of triathlon in Scotland. With competitors from all age groups and standards (complete novices through to elite internationals) we hope this will encourage people not only to come along and support the competitors but also consider taking part in future events."
The undoubted centrepiece of the event is the British Duathlon Championship Race (which incorporates the Scottish Championship) and is being used as a qualifying event for the World Duathlon Championships to be held in Canada on July 29th this year. President of triathlonscotland, Jackie Meekieson speaking about the Duathlon Championship said "To have the British Duathlon Championship Race taking place in Edinburgh is a terrific feather in the cap for not only our sport, but Scotland. The race is important not only in its own right but also as a dry run for next year when we hope to host the European Championships at the same venue."
Scots Sports Minister Patricia Ferguson speaking ahead of the event said "Through EventScotland, the Scottish Executive is determined to attract high profile events to Scotland. This event will provide a showcase for the sport of duathlon and triathlon in Scotland. It will hopefully provide a springboard to further success and hosting more international events in the future."
