Helen Lawrence Secures Number One Slot
Tuesday, 9th May 2006
Britain has a new World number 1 ranked female duathlete - Helen Lawrence - following victory on Saturday May 6th in the first race of the 2006 ITU World Duathlon series race in Mason, Ohio, USA.
Helen - who is the World Student Triathlon Champion (Majorca, 2004), 9th placed finisher at last year's World Duathlon Championships (Australia, 2005) and third placed finisher at the British Half Marathon Championships (Liverpool, 2006) - lead the 10km, 40km, 5km race from start to finish breaking the tape in a rapid 01:58:43.
Extending her lead throughout the race she won by the comfortable margin of 3 minutes, her splits being 34:16(10km run), 01:04:29(40km bike), 19:00(5km run). The startlist included athletes from USA, Canada, Switzerland, Kenya, Great Britain and one racing under the flag of the ITU.
Helen was pleased with the performance, a reward for a hard winter spent working and training in the North East of England in changeable weather conditions! The result means selection for the 2006 World Championships in Corner Brook, Canada in July.
Helen heads to the British Duathlon Championships this coming weekend in good form and good spirits. This race will see Helen take on Catriona Morrison (2005 World Duathlon siler Medalist) and Rosie Clarke (2005 World Junior Duathlon Bronze Medalist) in what promises to be the highlight of the weekend's racing.
