British Duathlon Championship.

Friday, 12th May 2006

Two of Scotland's leading triathletes Catriona Morrison and Fraser Cartmell  today spoke about the chance to race for Scotland on home soil in front of friends family and supporters. The British Duathlon Championship which is hosted in Edinburgh this year as part of the capitals triathlon festival occurs this Saturday morning, May 13th and sees over 600 athletes of all ages and abilities competing.

Scot's Team Member - Fraser Cartmell, considered a leading contender in the male elite race spoke with enthusiasm about the coming challenge

"Racing in a National Championship so close to home is great, something I've never done before, and so I'm really looking forward to the opportunity to do well in front of friends and family on a tough course, that should suit me very well.  I've raced, and won, the New Year's Day Tri which uses much of the same bike route, so I know that it is a very challenging loop round Arthur's Seat.  Being a part of a Scottish Team is always something I have been proud of, and doing as well as possible whilst wearing the vest is the aim."

Catriona Morrison, last year's World Silver Medallist in Duathlon also expressed pleasure at being able to race in Scotland..

"It is a rare opportunity and made all the better as we are racing in Edinburgh over a course that really shows the city in its full colours." Commenting on the elite female race field she continued. "Being both the Scottish and British National's it is sure to be a tough race. There are titles to be won but also the chance to qualify for the World Championships which will be in Canada later in the year.".  The women's race has a high class field including the 2004 European bronze medallist Helen Lawrence who is sure to be on fine running form.

Apart from the individual elite races and titles the championship also includes a 4 team challenge pitting Scotland against England, Ireland and Wales. Expressing hopes of the whole Scot's team Fraser concluded by saying "As far as teams go, I think Scotland has a very strong chance of doing well. .. Racing at home is always a boost."
