Leanda Cave Takes Second in EagleMan Half-Ironman
Thursday, 15th June 2006
In a race described as 'Flat, Windy, Fast and HOT!', Britain's Leanda Cave took second place in Maryland's EagleMan Ironman 70.3 Triathlon on Sunday.
Cave battled through strong currents and choppy waters on the 1.2 mile swim, and then faced stiff winds on the 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run stages. The race organisers had brought in 18,000 pounds of ice for the race, but thankfully not much of it was needed with the cool wind blowing across the course.
Switzerland's Natascha Badmann took her third consecutive EagleMan win having developed a comfortable 10 minute lead over Cave by the end of the race. Local favourite, Desiree Ficker, surged through her run and threatened to close down Cave in the closing miles; however the former World Champion had the strength to hold on and took second place by just 42 seconds as she finished with a time of 4:28.48.
