Tuesday, 29th August 2006
In 2007, the Singapore Ironman 70.3 will take place and serve as another international qualifying event for the 2007 Ford Ironman World Championship 70.3.
The event will be managed by Graeme Hannan and Nick Munting of X-Tri Australia and Hivelocity, a local sporting events organizer and well-known name on the local triathlon scene.
The inaugural event is scheduled for September 2, 2007 and will become one of 20 events in the Ironman 70.3 Series.
"We're proud to bring Ironman 70.3 to Asia and especially to such an impressive location here in Singapore. We look forward to developing this event over the coming years and are keen to shape the Singapore Ironman 70.3 into one of the sport's signature events in Asia," says Hannan.
Singapore, a historic country and city, is one of the major cross roads of the world; a major airline hub, a thriving and well appointed city and host to many international sporting events. The Singapore Ironman 70.3 course will be unmatched, with successive events to be conducted from a floating island in the Marina, a new development within Singapore's Inner Harbor. The bike and run course will take athletes past the city's landmarks and will utilize the East Coast Parkway as well as the Singapore CBD. The event has support from a variety of local organizations such as the Singapore Sports Council and the Singapore Tourism Board.
The Singapore Ironman 70.3 will consist of a 1.9 km swim, a 90 km bike and a 21 km run. Seventy-five qualifying spots to the 2007 Ford Ironman World Championship 70.3 in Clearwater, Florida will be up for grabs. Additionally, professional athletes will compete for a $25,000 (USD) prize purse. The event's first year is expected to draw more than 750 athletes from around the globe from locations such as Singapore, the Pacific Basin and Asia.
