British Results from ETU Poland World Cup Race
Monday, 18th September 2006
The Polish town of Kedzierzyn Kozle bore host to the latest European Triathlon Union World Cup race which saw a number of Brits take to the chilly waters of the Odra river.
Britain's Abbie Thorrington led out of the swim in the Women's event, demonstrating what a great year she has had in the water. She was followed out by a strong contingent of athletes making the front bike pack who worked extremely hard to keep the chasers at a reasonable distance. Through transition two, the leaders had extended their advantage to one minute over the peloton; however with the race covering the Olympic distance, twice that Thorrington is used to as a Junior athlete, she found the pace too strong and slipped back to 15th place.
Lenka Zemanova of the Czech Republic took the win with the host nation filling the rest of the podium with Ewa Dederko and Maria Czesnik in second and third.
Within the men's race, once again the British led out of the water with Andrew Fargus and Dann Brook, in his first race back from U23 World Championships, pacing a pack of 25 athletes through at the front.
The group of 25 were pushed hard on the early stages of the bike as two packs formed, one of 13 at the front including Fargus, and a chasing peloton of over 40 riders. The leaders took an advantage of a minute into transition two before the Ukranian, Glouschenko and Prochnow of Germany broke away two kilometres into the run.
The Ukranian managed to create a gap in the late stages to take his second European Cup win of the season with Prochnow in second. Jan Raphael, a fellow German, took third with Andrew Fargus in fourth. Dann Brook finished in 17th, Peter Freedman 30th, Tom Room 44th, Philip Wylie 58th and Ross Payne 61st.
