AGM Approves Proposal to Establish British Triathlon Federation & Triathlon England

Sunday, 5th November 2006

The Annual General Meeting of the British Triathlon Association today voted through proposals to transform the Association into a Federation and to establish Triathlon England as the membership organisation for England.  British Triathlon will now become a federation comprised of Triathlon England, triathlonscotland and Welsh Triathlon.

The meeting carried the resolution 62 votes for, 1 against, with 1 abstention.

As a result of the resolution passing British Triathlon now becomes a Federation rather than an Association and has adopted new  Memorandum and Articles of Association .

The current Executive Board has also been given a mandate to work  with representatives of the English Regional Committees to establish Triathlon England by the start of the new membership year which commences on the 1 April 2007. By that date membership of those current members of British Triathlon who have given an address in England or (if residing outside England) are eligible to represent England in international Triathlon competitions will transfer to Triathlon England.

Those members of British Triathlon who have given an address in Wales or (if residing outside Wales) are eligible to represent Wales in international Triathlon competitions become members of Welsh Triathlon for the remainder of  their current membership subscription and  those members who have given an address in Scotland or (if residing outside Scotland) are eligible to represent Scotland in international Triathlon competitions become members of triathlonscotland.

During the transition period up to the 1 April 2007, current British Triathlon members shall continue to enjoy full member benefits including insurance, access to free legal support, tri-news and the annual handbook.

British Triathlon will also enter into appropriate arrangements with the new Triathlon England company, and with triathlonscotland and Welsh Triathlon, in order that the resources of the Company will be made available to the three associations (on suitable terms) with the intention of maximising the efficient use of those resources for the benefit of all.  It is intended that by sharing resources that savings will be made in the costs of running the four organisations.

A second  resolution proposing that British Triathlon encourage event organisers to limit entry fees for Tri Stars, Youths and Juniors and recommends, subject to annual review, that entries to events for Tri Stars be no more than £10.00, for Youths no more than £15.00 and for Juniors no more than £20.00 was rejected by the meeting.

Whilst there was support for keeping the cost of entry to events for young  people down in order to make competition accessible, the meeting was concerned that adoption of the resolution would lead to a further reduction to the number of accessible draft legal races for youth and junior athletes.

Norman Brook, Chief Executive of British Triathlon said  "the Federation proposes to establish new draft legal races in 2007 through the sponsorship of Corus. We envisaged these will involve talented youth and junior competitiors.  Corus's sponsorship will help ensure that young people can afford to access  new competition opportunities."
