British Triathlon's Sport Personalities of the Year

Thursday, 14th December 2006

With the announcement that Zara Phillips was awarded the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, we thought we'd recap what a great year we've had at British Triathlon. Boasting an incredible seven World Champions across all the different disciplines and distances marks a truly fantastic season that started many months ago at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

Britain had triathletes medalling at all of the European and World Championship Elite, Under 23 and Junior competitions, totalling four golds, one silver and two bronze. Richard Stannard was crowned World Aquathlon champion in Lausanne, and in Duathlon there were medals at both European and World Championships, with the highlight being Catriona Morrison taking the World title in Corner Brook, Canada. The season was rounded off in impressive style as Bella Comerford stormed to World Long Distance Triathlon gold in Canberra, Australia a matter of weeks ago.

British Triathlon's 2006 World Champions:
Tim Don, World Elite Triathlon Champion
Will Clarke, World Under 23 Triathlon Champion
Alistair Brownlee, World Junior Triathlon Champion
Catriona Morrison, World Elite Duathlon Champion
Richard Stannard, World Elite Aquathlon Champion
Jodie Stimpson, World Junior Aquathlon Champion
Bella Comerford, World Elite Long Distance Champion

Other high profile victories have included Harry Wiltshire's World Student Triathlon title, Will Clarke's European Under 23 Championship win and Alistair Brownle''s gold medal from the European Duathlon Championships.

Simon Lessing's silver medal from the World 70.3 Half-Ironman Championships is another notable performance, as is Michelle Parsons' excellent year on the global Powerman duathlon series.

Roll on 2007!!!
