Cartmell 20th as Clarke Crashes Out in U23's

Saturday, 10th September 2005
Scotland's Fraser Cartmell finished a creditable 20th in the Under 23 category on the 2nd day of the ITU Elite Championships in Gamagori, Japan, while Britain's U23 Champion Will Clarke unfortunately crashed on the first corner after exiting in the top 15 from the swim. Cartmell put together a solid all-round performance in sweltering heat, to finish in 1:56:45 hrs, 4:03 min behind race winner Jarrod Shoemaker of the USA. Earlier in the day, Britain's Junior girls struggled with a combination of both heat and inexperience, to be led home by a fast-improving Natalie Barnard in 18th, Rosie Clarke in 20th, and Vicky Holland in 36th. Portugals Anais Moniz was crowned World Champion, as was New Zealand's Andrea Hewitt in the women's U23s. Full results can be found on the ITU website. The Championships continue tomorrow with the Junior Boys and Senior Women's and Men's races.
