Friday, 1st September 2006
Triathlon is the only global sport where Age-group competitors can compete in the World Championships at the same venue as their Elite counterparts. British Triathlon are taking a massive team of 293 athletes, including TSN's Sian Buckingham, backed up with a support crew to Lausanne, Switzerland for next weekends World Championships. All age-groups will be covered, with competitors ranging from the 17-19 to 75-79 year old categories over a 1500m swim, 40km bike and 10km run course. Interest in racing for team GB at the world championships was at an all time high this year, with in excess of 700 athletes racing one of the three qualifiers held at Ellesmere, Wakefield and the Dambuster event at Oakham. The team of 167 men and 126 women will head for Lausanne next week in confident mood. The athletes will be supported by a team made up of managers Barry Frost and Wendy Easter, and five others, in their bid for medal glory.
